Looking into more research, I have found some interesting things about COVID and its effect on the environment these days. Due to this current crisis, it has come to the attention of many climate activists and researchers that many companies these days are no longer accepting reusable cups and containers. There are also endless amounts of disposable masks found on the streets and at the beach. As I thought more about how I wanted to work on my proposal I thought about more educational purposes with the use of graphic design. I have come up with the idea to use both informational and environmentally friendly packaging design. With informational design, I can create things like infographics where I design pages that talk about the negative effects of single use plastics and how much water consumption we use on a daily basis. I can also touch base on how graphic design can be used in a more environmentally friendly way using informational design. With packaging design, I can research materials and techniques used to make more eco friendly packaging alternatives for companies. I also would like to make a catalog specifically detailing the negative effects these certain things have on the world. All of these elements that I plan to include will have an educational effect that will bring awareness to what is happening in the world when it comes to the environment.
Environmentally-friendly design
May 2020
I am concentrating in Graphic Design with an Entrepreneurship in the Arts minor. Environmentalism is a topic that I’ve been interested in for quite some time now and have been wanting to include it in my work. In a world full of graphic designers, there isn’t a large portion of sustainable related work. For my senior capstone, I would like to take my skills in graphic design and entrepreneurship and create a business of environmentally friendly branding. I plan to research different kinds of eco-friendly materials such as paper and fabrics. With these found materials, I will be using them to create things like tote bags and stationery to promote branding. I plan on creating stationery, including a business card and a letterhead made on these researched materials. I will also be creating a logo along with a catalog to showcase the idea behind my eco- friendly branding and materials. Another thing that I plan to do is to make a website for this brand and to make stickers made out of biodegradable material. All items that I am going to make will be created with both these environmentally-friendly materials and an ink-based solution that is not harmful to the planet.
I have taken classes here at montserrat that have made me ready to take on this project. I’ve taken Graphic Design 3 in which I learned how to create stationery and a standards manual. I’ve also learned how to create catalog layouts which will help me when I create my catalog. Being an entrepreneurship in the arts minor, I’ve taken Professional Writing and Business Practices. In these classes, I learned how to do PR work and also how to start up a business. I worked on group projects where I created both a nonprofit and for profit business. These included having the opportunity to create a few logos and create social media renderings for the specific businesses. I also took Typography where I learned the basics in web design. I recently worked for a company for my internship where I got to work on welcome packets for AirBnb home rentals. I believe that being able to work on this process helped me gain a new skill of working on one sheets and working with clients. I was able to send them to the owner who would have the chance to show his clients for approval or disapproval.
For me, working for sustainable graphic design and organizations is something I want to do as my career. I believe that this project will open up the door for me to connect more with these kinds of organizations. It will give me the opportunity to find sustainable work in the design field. Recently, I discovered Emma Fanning who is a sustainable graphic designer and she seems to be one of very few. Graphic design isn’t necessarily eco-friendly when you think about it. There is so much paper and ink used in these processes that makes you wonder if there’s anything you can do as a designer. I’ve also recently discovered a small community of sustainable designers and realized that there are other people out there who want to make a difference in their work. I’m one of those people who want to make a difference when it comes to my design work. I want to be able to contribute to the graphic design industry and not hurt the planet at the same time. Being able to do this sustainable design project will help me get to where I need to be as a sustainable designer.
